The Medical Examiner's office, under the jurisdiction of the Department of Public Safety, maintains 24 hour, seven day a week investigation and certification of:

• all violent, suspicious or unexpected deaths

• unattended deaths

• deaths of inmates in the county and municipal jails,

• deaths of which might constitute a threat to public health, and

• deaths related to employment or consumer product safety

This office provides a qualified pathologist to perform autopsies where necessary to determine and certify the cause, manner and circumstances of such deaths and to testify in courts of law concerning the findings.

The Medical Examiner maintains records of autopsies and investigations and provides copies as provided by law.
