MEDIATION What is mediation?
“Friendly or diplomatic intervention, usually by consent of invitation,
for settling differences between persons, nations, etc.” Webster’s
New World Dictionary What is peer
mediation?
The use of a trained student mediator to bring about the resolution of
conflict between two or more students. What
does the peer mediator do?
A peer mediator is a student who has been trained in the skills and techniques
of mediation and the mediation process. The mediator facilitates those
in conflict to bring about a resolution. The peer mediator is a neutral
third party who does not judge or determine right or wrong. It is not
the responsibility of the mediator to determine the outcome of the dispute.
The peer mediator assists both parties in expressing their feelings and
developing solutions in order to reach a mutual agreement. Why
should schools choose peer mediation?
Many conflicts exist within the school setting. If not resolved, many
of these conflicts could lead to violence. Conflicts in schools are often
brought on by problems at home, stress, poor anger management skills,
or bad feelings that were left unresolved. Mediation allows all parties
an opportunity to express their feelings in a non-threatening environment.
Often feelings and concerns that were previously
unknown are brought out into the open. The mediation process is usually
the first opportunity for the individuals in conflict to listen to both
sides of the dispute.
Peer mediation empowers students
to develop solutions to their own conflicts. When the disputants are
involved in shaping their resolution, they are more inclined to respect
their agreements and want to make them work. Benefits

Training

This training is offered over two school days. The length of the training
depends upon the grade level of the students. Student training involves
approximately sixteen to twenty students. With the exception of high school,
usually no more than three grade levels are involved at one training session.
The training techniques and materials are geared to the ages and grade
levels of the participants. The training focuses on understanding conflict,
learning communication and problem solving skills, and facilitating the
mediation process. The training uses videotapes, role-plays, and exercises
designed to enhance sensitivity, communication, and cooperation. Manuals
and certificates are provided to all students completing the training.
