Thursday, August 14, 2008 Seniors and Disabled Encouraged to File Tax Returns to Receive Economic Stimulus RebatesMore than 5,800 Atlantic County residents have not yet claimed their economic stimulus rebates, according to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Economic stimulus rebates are based on taxpayers' 2007 tax returns. But many residents are not required to file a tax return and may be unaware of their eligibility to receive a stimulus payment. This includes low-income workers, Social Security beneficiaries, certain railroad retirees and those who receive certain benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs. The Atlantic County Division of Intergenerational Services reminds seniors and individuals with disabilities who may not otherwise be required to file a tax return, that in order to receive an economic stimulus payment this year, they must file a 2007 return prior to October 15, 2008. The IRS has provided special filing instructions for this circumstance. The instructions explain which lines on the tax return the filers need to complete. Individuals who had at least $3,000 of qualifying income will be eligible to receive a rebate of $300, and those who file jointly will be eligible to receive a $600 rebate. Residents in need of a 1040A tax form or assistance in completing a tax return may call the Division of Intergenerational Services, toll free, at 1-888-426-9243. For more information about the economic stimulus payments, contact the IRS at 1-866-234-2942 or visit www.irs.gov. |
