Childhood Lead Poisoning Program

The Environmental Health Unit investigates reports of Elevated Blood Lead Levels in children in cooperation with nurses from the Community Health Unit. When a child with an Elevated Blood Lead Level is confirmed, an investigation is conducted where the child resides. Certified lead investigators use a lead analyzer (XRF) and also take dust wipe samples in order to identify lead hazards within the child’s environment. These hazards may include peeling or chipping ‘defective’ lead based paint and lead dust noted in window wells and underneath radiators. When lead hazards are found, the Division will order an abatement or ‘clean up’. The Division will also monitor the abatement to ensure that all work is completed in an orderly fashion. Information about lead abatement requirements is available by calling 645-5971.
