Storm Update - 9 AM, October 31
Access to the barrier island communities remains prohibited at this time. Damage assessments are ongoing. There are still extensive power outages in these communities, downed live wires and potential structural damages which make it unsafe for the return of residents. Once public safety and emergency management officials determine that these issues have been satisfactorily resolved, a decision will be made as to when access will be restored and residents can return home.
Officials are aware that residents are anxious to return to their homes. However, public safety is the top priority.
"We cannot put our residents into harm's way. And at this time the circumstances on the barrier islands remain hazardous," stated County Executive Dennis Levinson. "We appreciate the public's patience and cooperation. Please be assured that we are working around the clock on your behalf."
Residents who require assistance should continue to contact their local office of emergency management or local police department's non-emergency phone numbers - all of which are available in the phone book.
